Job Posting: Dance Animator – Ontario Dances, Burlington Performing Arts Centre

Ontario Dances seeks to have more live dance performances in Ontario communities and more people engaged, interested and invested in dance at a local level in our province. This program aims to increase the range and diversity of dance available to communities in Ontario outside of Toronto. From dance classes and workshops to artists in residence to the presentation of dance work from leading Ontario-based professional choreographers, Ontario Dances will offer the public and professionals alike the opportunity to participate in dance at all levels.

Ontario Dances aims to reflect the range of artistic practices in the dance community and to support excellence, regional activity, linguistic and cultural diversity and Aboriginal and Franco-Ontarian identity.

THE ROLE OF THE DANCE ANIMATOR The role of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre’s dance Animator is to work with Centre Executive Director, Brian McCurdy to increase the public’s awareness and appreciation of dance through arts education/learning programs. These programs must be tailor made to each local community and relevant within the context of existing events in the community and to the dance community. Animator will work with schools/educational community, dance community as well as the general community at large.

Duties include (but are not limited to): assist with the planning, promotion and execution of the Centre’s Ontario Dances community outreach events; develop a communications plan and promotional strategies (includes some copywriting) for the Centre’s dance season; research dance companies being presented at the Centre; identify opportunities in the community to promote the Centre’s dance presentations; make presentations to students, organizations, etc.; be present at all Centre dance presentations and community outreach events; attend professional development opportunities provided by the Ontario Arts Council; develop and maintain a dance distribution/communication list (local dance schools, businesses, etc.) and maintain communication with them about the Centre’s dance program (performances and workshops); write a report summarizing the 2014-15 dance outreach and dance Animator activities. The dance animator is expected to work approximately 10 hours per week between September 2014 and May 20, 2015.

The Dance Animator must be present at the following 2014-15 dance performances and outreach events presented by The Burlington Performing Arts Centre.

2014-15 Dance Presentations

2014-15 Community Outreach Events Workshops and outreach events will be planned in support of the above artists plus Dreamwalker Dance Company. Exact dates to be confirmed.

Contract includes duties noted above and all local travel, expenses, etc. When you are required to travel outside of the Halton region (e.g. for professional development, performances), reimbursement will be made separately through the Ontario Arts Council.

The Dance animator is required to attend the annual professional development program of Ontario Dances

*Both parties reserve the right to terminate the contract with 30 days notice.
